Mechatronics Students Attend National Convention
Eleven students and four faculty members from the Mechatronics Technology program attended the Manufacturing in America 2019 national convention in Detroit, MI, March 20-21. The Manufacturing in America event is a professional convention for engineers, technicians, automation vendors, students, and others in the manufacturing industry to learn about the latest technologies and plan for the future of manufacturing. The students were able to see demonstrations of cutting-edge technology and have hands-on experiences with new devices and products from industry-leading manufacturing companies like Siemens. They learned about product integrations across industries and attended educational seminars on safety, technological applications of products, and more. SUNY Delhi had a booth in the education zone of the show, the only college in New York State to be represented. The students took turns staffing the table and gave examples of projects they are working on in class. They showcased some of their automation gear and engaged with the manufacturing professionals one-on-one. This opportunity was so meaningful for students because, as Mechatronics majors, they are learning to not only understand or design complex systems (like manufacturing technologies), but also to learn the hands-on applications of building, maintaining, and improving those systems. "This sets SUNY Delhi students apart. We are the only ones doing this type of hands-on training combined with the theoretical background knowledge, preparing students to enter the industry at the technologist level," says Assistant Professor Will Warner. SUNY Delhi's Mechatronics Design associate degree program was the first of its kind in New York State, and the Mechatronics Technology bachelor degree was the first of its kind in the country. Delhi is the only college to have three curricula nationally certified through the American Design Drafting Association. Graduates are prepared to step directly into high-paying jobs working on automated systems and intelligent equipment in manufacturing, food processing, pharmaceutical production, power generation and distribution, mining, and other applications.

UA Students Participate in Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference
Nearly 500 students at The University of Alabama highlighted their research and creative projects during the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference on March 27. The 12th annual conference is hosted by UA's Office for Undergraduate Research and the Office for Research and Economic Development. Poster presentations are grouped by research areas -- instead of by academic colleges or departments -- to align with national trends of using interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving. The conference spurs interest in research among undergraduate students and helps students polish their communication skills, said Dr. Kim Bissell, director of the Office for Undergraduate Research. "We have got some pretty phenomenal students who are truly doing great things," she said.

UA's Forza Financial Offers Innovative Service to Entrepreneurs
Forza Financial is a microfinance bank built for entrepreneurs. The firm, run by University of Alabama students, offers financial services at both socially and financially sustainable rates to new and existing small businesses with an additional emphasis on financial education. Forza's intent is to build a better Alabama with every loan. Forza was awarded the 2018 Most Outstanding Professional Organization of all the student organizations at UA. It also partnered with Junior Enterprise USA, which is the American branch of the Junior Enterprise Movement - the largest student-run entrepreneurial movement in the world.

UA's Avanti Team Strives to Get New Students Oriented
Nearly 60 students are serving on The University of Alabama's Avanti team -- a group that seeks to welcome new students during the Bama Bound orientation process. By becoming well-acquainted with Capstone academic programs and co-curricular opportunities, the Avanti Team provides essential support in preparing incoming students to meet the challenges of enrollment and in welcoming high school groups to campus for large-scale recruitment events. The Avanti team functions under the auspices of the Office of Orientation and Special Programs in the Division of Academic Affairs.

Three ISU College of Design student projects recognized in national Hospitality Design Awards competition
Of the five finalists in the student category of the 14th HD Awards competition, three were from Iowa State University, including the eventual winner. This national competition, sponsored by Hospitality Design magazine, recognizes outstanding projects in 23 categories related to the hospitality industry. Recent ISU College of Design graduates Taylor Bryan and Holland Shodeen, both of whom received Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in interior design in May 2017, won with their "Arrowhead Resort" project developed in the spring 2017 interior design senior studio. The other Iowa State finalist projects included "The Isthmus" by Shawn Barron, May 2018 Master of Architecture graduate, and Matt Lechowicz, May 2018 Bachelor of Architecture graduate; and "Rainforest Hotel and Spa" by May 2018 BArch graduates Nolan Christensen and Lucas Confalionieri and May 2018 BFA in interior design graduate Kyla Peterson. The latter projects were developed in the interdisciplinary fall 2017 Panama integrative design studio. All three teams were honored at the HD Awards ceremony June 6 in New York City, and their work was published in the June issue of Hospitality Design.
